Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Belly Binding & The KB5™
What is the KB5™ Knotted Belly Bind™?
The KB5 Knotted Belly Bind™ is a modern postpartum recovery garment inspired by the ancient practice of belly binding and informed by human-centered spacesuit engineering principles.
Designed to support the body after vaginal or C-section birth, the KB5™ provides adaptive stabilization through five adjustable knots that allow the wearer to customize compression, comfort, and support throughout
recovery.
The KB5™ is:
- Patent Pending
- Made in the USA
- Constructed from 100% stretch nylon
- Designed for breathability, flexibility, and responsive
support
Why does the tying process matter?
The tying process is intentional.
Each knot creates an opportunity to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect mind, body, and recovery during the postpartum period.
The KB5™ encourages a more conscious relationship with healing, one rooted in support rather than pressure to “bounce back.”
Why have women belly bound throughout history?
For centuries, women across cultures have practiced postpartum belly binding to support healing, recovery, warmth, stabilization, and rest after birth.
Binding traditions have existed throughout:
- Ancient Egypt
- Malaysia & Indonesia (Bengkung)
- Traditional Chinese Medicine
- Japan
- Latin America
- India
- African postpartum traditions
Historically, binding was used to help support the abdomen, encourage rest, reconnect the body after birth, and care for the mother during the postpartum recovery window.
Why did TIS modernize bellybinding?
Traditional belly binding methods are beautiful and effective, but can often feel difficult to apply independently, inconsistent in tension, or impractical for modern postpartum life.
The KB5™ was developed to modernize this ancient practice through:
- engineered compression
- intuitive knotting
- adaptive support
- incision-conscious design
- breathable materials
- independent usability
Inspired by spacesuit engineering principles, the KB5™ was designed around how the body moves, heals, adapts, and responds to load during recovery.
Is the KB5™ shapewear or waist training?
No.
The KB5™ is not designed to function like traditional corsets, waist trainers, girdles, or aesthetic compression garments.
Rather than forcing the body into a fixed shape, the KB5 was intentionally designed to:
- support recovery
- encourage breath
- allow mobility
- adapt to swelling fluctuations
- reconnect the wearer to their body during healing
Many users describe the sensation as feeling “held” rather than restricted.
Wearing The KB5™
When should I wear the KB5™?
The KB5™ was specifically designed for the immediate postpartum period, especially during the first 40 days after birth when the body is healing, swelling fluctuates, and organs are reorganizing.
Many users continue wearing the bind throughout the first 3 months postpartum depending on comfort and personal recovery preferences.
You may wear the KB5™ as often as desired postpartum, while listening to your body and comfort level.
Always consult your medical provider or care team before using any postpartum support garment after vaginal or C-section birth.
How long can I wear it each day?
Wear time can vary based on your comfort. Many mothers wear it for several hours a day, gradually adjusting as their body recovers.
Can the KB5™ roll during movement or workouts?
It can — especially during:
- prolonged all-day activity
- exercise
- workouts
- high movement
- wear outside the intended postpartum recovery window
The KB5™ was designed primarily for restorative postpartum recovery rather than high-intensity compression or fitness performance wear.
Many traditional postpartum cultures encourage slowing down,
resting, bonding with baby, and minimizing physical strain during the early healing period.
How was sizing developed?
The sizing architecture was developed with an understanding of how traditional Bengkung binding adapts to the changing postpartum body.
Because every postpartum body is unique, the adjustable knotting system allows users to customize tension and support throughout recovery.
If you fall outside our current size range or desire a more personalized fit, please contact us directly regarding custom sizing options.
Can I wear the KB5™ if I haven’t had a baby?
Some individuals may still appreciate the supportive sensation of the bind. However, the KB5™ was specifically engineered around postpartum recovery needs and may feel very different from traditional
shapewear or compression garments.
Can I wear the KB5™ years postpartum?
Yes.
Some users choose to wear the KB5™ anytime postpartum for moments when they desire grounding, abdominal support, warmth, or reconnection with their body.
Postpartum recovery exists on a continuum, and every body’s timeline is different.
Postpartum & C-Section Use
Can I wear the KB5™ after a C-section?
Always consult your medical provider before postpartum binding after surgery.
In the vast majority of cases, yes, the KB5™ can be worn immediately after a C-section.
The five-knot design was intentionally developed to allow adjustable knot placement above and below a healing incision, helping users customize support without placing direct pressure on sensitive areas.
Can I use heat packs or castor oil packs with the KB5™?
Yes.
Many users choose to use the ties to help gently secure:
- heat packs
- warm compresses
- castor oil packs
- postpartum abdominal care practices
Always use caution with heat and consult your care provider with any postpartum recovery therapies.
